It's been called a Baroque and Renaissance jewel, with work by Bramante, Pontelli, and others. is decorated with stuccoes by Cortona and paintings by Peruzzi and Maratta.
The most famous element is Chigi Chapel, designed by Cortona with a stunning fresco by Raphael. Over the arch of the chapel, the fresco depicts Sibyls and Angels and the four Prophets in the lunette which, after Raphael's death, were completed by his pupil Viti in 1514.
The Cesi Chapel was designed by another Renaissance artist of some note, a guy named Michelangelo.
Enough info, let's get to the photos!
Raphael's lunette.
Part of a dome.
A close-up of part of the Raphael.
Sphinx holding up a marble casket.
If I can have a couple of Sphinxes
do this for me, I'm rethinking cremation.
There are angels among us.
The heart of the dome.
This is the non-zoom view
of the photo above this one.
Remember, there is art like this on
church ceilings all throughout Rome.
