More Random Paris Photos

Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel
through the Louvre Pyramid.

Notre Dame towers from the Right Bank.

The Tribunal de commerce de
Paris, a court building on the
same Seine island as Notre
Dame.  Corporate insolvencies
are resolved here.

The Conciergerie -- one of the two round
towers to the right was named "The
Babbler"  because the muffled screams
of the tortured could be heard from it.
Think about that while you are
trying to fall asleep tonight.

This musical was very popular
in Paris when King Louis XVI
was guillotined.  The scene
where Scar kills Mufasa
reminded Parisians of the
king putting his head into
the basket for two points.

Place du Chatelet, a fountain
built by Napoleon's order to
honor some guy named
Napoleon's military victories.

The statue at the top of the
fountain is Victory, represented
by Nike (alas, the sneaker
company isn't paying me
anything to highlight that).

From a distance it looks like
Napoleon, which wouldn't
have surprised us.  In fact we
are more surprised it not's him.

The Four Sphinxes were added much
later, during the Haussmann redo
of Paris.

"It is my privilege to extend to
you a laurel and hearty
handshake."

This statue of Victory (Nike) was made
in 1808, whilst this movie scene was
set in 1874, so the statue clearly
inspired the movie.
