The Arc de Triomphe Is A Triumph

Lady Liberty (Our Lady Liberty,
also made in France, is not
scary).  Rick Steves writes
thusly: "Lady Liberty--looking
like an ugly reincarnation
of Joan of Arc--screams
"Freedom is this way!"

France's Tomb of the Unknown
 Soldier (from World War I)

This is the most famous
relief on the Arc -- La
Marseillaise (Le Depart
des Volontaires de 1792).

Angel with a Trumpet.

The Arc's ceiling.

Along with an eagle, the Arc has lists
of French victories since the Revolution
(believe it or not, there are French
victories since then, despite their
reputation as cheese-eating surrender
monkeys.

Although, like the Americans, the
French didn't win many battles
in French Indochina.

Tunisia and Morocco memorial.

The French Resistance plaque.

The funeral of General Marceau.
Killed in battle in 1796, this
general for the Revolution was
immortalized in Lord Byron's
Childe Harold's Pilgrammage.
But you already knew all that.

Here's the view coming
out of the Metro station.

Oh, one more selfie with the Arc.
