Last year, we spent a late afternoon, evening, and early-ish morning in Paris on our way home from Bordeaux. Besides walking around the city and having a fabulous cafe dinner, the one place we had to see was Sainte-Chapelle. As soon as I booked the one night hotel in Paris, I bought tickets for Saint-Chapelle.
And, of course, we had to go back on this trip.
Consecrated in 1248, in my opinion Saint-Chapelle has the most stunning stained glass I've ever seen (Carol put the Cathedral Chartres first, but she's wrong she just has a different opinion than I do; one that is not as valid is mine.)
(Editor: Ouch, that's going to sting. Writer: Nah. Carol will read it, shake her head "no," and go on with her life. Hopefully I will be able to go on with mine!)
So we went again at 9am for when it opens, which is the best, least crowded time to go. I was even able to take a floor selfie of Carol and I, with the tops of the stained glass and arched ceiling above us.
The royal chapel is considered to be the among the best achievements of the Rayonnant period of Gothic architecture. (Don't worry kids, that won't be on the test at the end of the blog).
Alas, it was Carol's turn to have a stomach issue (not the same symptoms of mine, which had ended several days earlier), so we cut short our visit. It's a good thing we had been there back at the end of August 2024, so my need for Saint-Chapelle was satiated by the combination of this short visit and that longer one.
If you haven't been, the pictures and the one video tell the story of why you should go.
