The Best Pedro In The World Isn't Pedro Martinez

It's Pedro's House of Lamb!

On TripAdvisor, the second highest rated restaurant in Queenstown is Pedro’s House of Lamb.

I’m sorry, but I absolutely HAD TO eat from a place called Pedro’s House of Lamb.  Some of the internet websites have it classified as “Mexican food” which is some sort of namism or something.

It’s a takeout place, and Pedro’s only has ONE THING on the menu, and that makes it great.  Lamb shoulder cooked in garlic and rosemary, with scalloped potatoes (not American-style with cheese, but still pretty good).  Oh, they also sold bakery bread loaves to go with it, but that’s not on the website.

So, I called in the order for 5:30 pick-up – we were already in Queenstown and it didn’t make sense, given how tired we were after an action-packed day, to drive out to the house, wait a bit, and then go back in and pick it up.  So, we walked around Queenstown some more, enjoying the first day of Daylight Savings Time.

I had called in for three orders, and then we headed out Gorge Road to pick it up.  First Carol got some green beans so we would have some veggies with it, and then I stopped and bought a couple of bottles of wine (had one that night, one the next).  Shockingly, both were Pinot Noirs (that’s the only red grown in Central Otago).

When we went into Pedro’s the sign said that one order was perfect for two people.  I was processing that information as I paid for all three.  That meant we had enough food to last three or four nights (which we didn’t need).  We explained our confusion, and, since we spoke with American accents, they took pity on us and refunded the money for one order ($45 – which is a bit less than $30 US).

It was great!  We did not eat right away – but Carol reheated it, and the meat just fell off the bone.  We had some with our eggs the next morning.  By Monday night (after the wine tour), the second lamb shoulder was even tastier than the first (on Sunday), because it had been sitting in the juices for 24 hours+.

Besides Vknow, you definitely want to go to Pedro’s when in Queenstown.  Just make sure you are placing the right sized order when you call!
