A neoclassical style church very near to the modern Almundena Cathedral of Madrid and the Royal Palace, the Basilica de San Francisco El Grande was built in just eight years and finished in 1784. It includes paintings by Goya and Zubaran and is Franciscan, as the original building on the site was founded by Francis of Assisi.
In all the times we had been to Madrid, we had not gone in, so rather than go again to the Almundena Cathedral, we popped in here.
It has what is considered to be the fourth largest dome in Europe, and the dome is shaped more like Rome's Pantheon than Rome's St. Peter.
Santiago Matamoros
Battle of Clavijo.
The battle is believed to have
never happened and just be
legendary, but don't tell
that to Spaniards.
The church from
across the street.
Santiago, when he's not on
a horse busily Mata'ing Moros!
As you will see in this and
the next bunch of photos,
the church has quite a few
domes. There is nothing like
a dome.
