To Market, To Market

Before our Thai cooking school, our local guide took us to the market in Chiang Mai to shop for some food.  This was the morning market -- it opens at 3am.

Needless to say, we did NOT get there at 3am (Editor: If it's "needless to say," why did you say it?  Writer: Ackshully, I wrote it, didn't say it.)

It's not as big or stunning as markets in countries like Spain and Portugal, but it's always great wandering through a market.  Our local guide spent time talking about various foods, including fruits and meats, and Bun chimed in as well.  (Alas, the local guide's name escapes me).

For a while I was easily distracted by a butcher cutting up pigskin (not in the shape of a football), his big knife thwacking down in a simple, yet effective slicing stroke.

The market isn't just food, there's tables of
flowers, decorations, toys, and various
sundries.

Some of the fruits.

Bun explains food to Carol, Mark,
Terri, and Vale: "You put it in
your mouth and chew."  Things
are different in Southeast Asia!*

*That's probably NOT what he said.

Dried Tilapia, a very popular meal
in Thailand. Seems fishy to me.
