Last Day In Cadiz -- A Miss And A Few Hits

The Roman Theater in Cadiz was rediscovered in 1980 and is the largest in Spain.  Except when we got there the next morning, we found it is closed for renovations.  Sigh.

No sign, no nothing, just locked doors.  We were able to squeeze in a view of it at the end of a short alley, but that’s not the same as being able to trod on the same stones that Romans did 2,000 years ago.

Editor: Out of curiousity, have you ever used the word “trod” on the blog before.  Writer: (Mind clicking through past blogs) Nope.  Editor: Good use of an old-timey word!  Writer: Did you just compliment me?  Editor: Well, don’t get used to it.)

We then went to two of three churches on a combined ticket.  At the first one, the Oratorio de la Santa Cruz, there are two incredible chapels, as well as a Goya and a Velazquez.  The second one, Hospital de Nuestra Señora del Carmen includes a stunning El Greco.

Editor: Is there an El Greco painting that isn't stunning?  Writer: Not that I've seen.

From there we went to the Castle of Santa Catalina, which is a star shaped fortress built in the 18th century (also in the iconic "Die Another Day" Pierce Brosnan/Halle Berry scene).  The isn't much to see in the fort, but just the chance to walk on the wall makes it worth visiting.  Plus it was just down the street from our Parador, where we needed to get the car from for our drive to Seville.
