In the planning the trip, I was undecided between stopping on the way to Malaga in Antequera or Frigiliana.
Antequera is known for its nearby Dolmens which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Dolmens are two or more upright stones with a single stone lying across them. The ones in Antequera date back to the Neolithic and Copper Ages, from around 3750 to 2200 BC. Antequera also has some interesting historical sights in the town itself, including a Royal Monument church in the Gothic/Mudejar/Renaissance style, palaces, hermitages, chapels, convents, an Alcazaba (fortress), arches and gates, and fountains and sculptures.
Frigiliana is considered one of the most beautiful "white towns" of Andalusia. It is nestled in foothills of the Sierra Almijara and the Mediterranean Sea. The white towns of Andalusia has nothing to do with race (so calm down!), but because the houses are either entirely or almost entirely whitewashed because the lime white cools the houses during the hot summers and also disinfects.
I gave Carol some background on both and asked her to choose. She choose Antequera. However, three Spanish experts I consulted all advised while Antequera is nice, Frigiliana was the better choice, so we switched our decision.
We had picked up the car at the Granada airport so I didn't have to deal with driving in Granada. That proved a moot point, as I had ended up driving from Cordoba to Granada because the train schedule was all messed up by the nationwide power outage (actually nationSwide, because Portugal).
Anyhow, it was a cloudy day on the Med foothills, so Frigiliana wasn't as stunning as the photos on the internet make it look. It was still a beautiful town to walk around, with narrow streets/alleys, whitewashed houses, views for miles (although it was hard to see the Med with the semi-darkened sky), cute shops, flower pots, and more. I just wish we had been blessed with a sunny, blue sky day.
Most of the streets are too narrow for cars, and since Frigiliana is built into the lower part of a mountainside, we mountain goated it throughout the town, past the cutest houses that would have been cuter in the sun. Que sera, sera.
