Diamond Girl

(Anytime you can start a blog post with a Neil Diamond song title, it’s a good post, even if it is not!)

After the zodiac boat cruise, we headed across the ring road to Diamond Beach.  As Giorgio pointed out, “Diamond Beach” is not the Icelandic name, it was named it by American tourists.  The actual name is Breidamerkursander.  As I archly noted to Giorgio, “you’re welcome. . .we did you a favor.”

Anyhow, the black sand beach is littered blue, white, and transparent bergy bits.  Some are big and some are small.  They glitter like diamonds as they slowly melt.  Some are out of the water, and some are stuck on the sand just into the water.

They come out via the river from the lagoon, and either wash out to sea, or end up on the side.  Many of the icebergs are over 1,000 years old.  It’s very impressive, and if you decide to get engaged in Iceland, Diamond Beach would be the place to propose.  It is one of forty sights on any top ten must-sees in Iceland.

We did not have a long visit, but did get to walk down the beach aways.
