Skogafoss

Our first stop on the third day in Iceland (second day of the tour) was, not surprisingly, at a waterfall.  The Skogafoss is 200 feet high, and was once the former coastline of Iceland, before it grew some more.  Named after the Skoga River, the falls are an impressive 49 feet wide.

The spray from the falls was quite strong as I approached the falls on the east bank of the river.  I got quite close and quite wet.  Sad to say there was no rainbow as there was no sun.  Apparently it is known for having a beautiful rainbow on sunny days.

One of the amazing aspects of the waterfalls here is that, because there are very few trees in Iceland, the views are not obscured, and on a sunny day, many falls will have rainbows.  I have a bunch of waterfall hikes in the my beloved Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, but because they are in the woods, they never create a rainbow.
