Our final lunch was at a roadside restaurant on the way back from Memphis and Saqarra. It was outdoors, and was delicious. A highlight was walking in right where the baker was making puffy pitas (my favorite bread ever) and serving it to us hot out of the oven.
After eating that bread warm, it really didn't matter what came next. But that was good too -- first they brought out more bread, along with hummus and baba ghannouj. There were beets and pickled vegetables.
Finally, the main course came out. We had been given the choice of quail or no quail, and I went with the quail. They are small birds, so there were also lamb kebabs, chicken (dry white meat), rice, and tomatoes. Other than the dry chicken, it was all good. A good final lunch.
There's a lot going on in this photo. The
baker is pulling a puffy pita out of the
wood-fired stove. Meanwhile, a fellow
traveler is reaching into his wallet
to tip one dollar, which happens
a lot in Egypt. A guy farted and I
reflexively tipped him a dollar.
I didn't quail at eating this
quail. It was quite tasty.
